The Osmani Memorial Auditorium in Dhaka, Bangladesh is one of the country’s oldest cultural complexes. The auditorium was established in 1978 and has been a centerpiece of urban Dhaka for more than four decades; hosting seminars, conferences, award ceremonies, concerts, and various cultural events. However, the aging complex was in serious need of renovation and required modernization to shine once again. Recognizing this, a comprehensive renovation initiative was undertaken to upgrade the complex with world-class amenities, improvements in the physical environment, and a redesigned HVAC system.

Tritech Building Services was selected to serve as the contractor for the installation of a modern HVAC system of this landmark Complex. Considering the auditorium’s multi-faceted offering in event types – from business conferences to musical concerts, such constraints required a greater level of engineering and designing expertise. Meeting the cooling requirement of a facility that can go from being packed with business executives networking at a trade show conference – to teenagers dancing their hearts out in a musical concert – required an innovative HVAC solution with careful planning. The goal was to find a long-term solution to the auditorium’s outdated cooling infrastructure, prioritize energy efficiency and minimize maintenance.

As such Tritech incorporated the World’s highest efficiency Oil Free Magnetic Bearing Chiller brand “SMARDT” Water Cooled Chiller in the facility. The Australian brand, ‘Smardt,’ is the pioneer and market leader of the technology whose performance has been well proven in similar facilities like Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall etc. Following a technical assessment, the SMARDT chiller successfully met the facility’s requirements and surpassed the anticipated energy savings. The installation is currently saving more than 30% electricity bill over the conventional system.

The renovation project of the Auditorium started in March 2019 and was completed seven months ahead of schedule. Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated the newly decorated Osmani Memorial Auditorium on December 9th, 2019. After the hugely successful renovation program was complete, the audience was highly complimentary of the changes in both physical and performance-space environments of the Auditorium.
